Reflection (Character Attributes - Respect and Responsibility) on Hike from Bukit Timah Nature Reserve to McRitchie Resevoir (20110514)

For those who are holding the cards on Respect and Responsibility, copy the quote that is most meaningful to you and explain why. Substantiate it with something that you had experienced, felt, observed, heard during the hike.

  1. "Among the individuals, as well as among nations, respecting other people's rights leads to peace." It is meaningful to me as I want peace among the group. During that training hike, some of my friends made some nasty comments about my idea for the first situation but they did not say it out loud and I did not hear it. So, we did not have any arguments.

  2. “It is easy to dodge our responsibilities, but we cannot dodge the consequences of dodging our responsibilities.”~Josiah Charles
This quote is very meaningful to what i have observed during the hike. During the briefing/activity. We were in a scenario where we need to go find answers to questions in order for us not to be "casualties" (casualties cannot eat or drink their own food).
So it was our responsibility to find the answers, but some people did not really try their best to find the answers so in the end they could not eat their own food or drink their own water .

  3. Respect:
"When you are content to be simply yourself and don't compare or compete, everybody will respect you." Lao Tzu, Ancient Chinese Philosopher.
I think that its quote means a lot as I feel that people will really respect you if you are not proud. It reminds me of what the teachers have said, its like a lot of the outdoor leaders are proud/ arrogant as they have more experience and I think that we should like still respect them (although the quote say...) because they have more experience and sometimes you just have to accept how people are and most people would not respect them and I think that they will have that feeling too, so just maybe tell them the reason and maybe they would try to improve and it will also make you feel better....(like you helped someone and also make them change to the better making it easier for you to accept them)( I think I am out of the topic already....)

  4. "Self-respect is the cornerstone of all virtue" -John Herschel (1792-1871) I think that is the quote that i think means a lot because, without respect, the other virtues would not be "real". We need self-respect as well as respect for others as the cornerstone of all virtues. Without self-respect and respect for others, my tean and i would not have been able to complete the hike up Bukit Timah hill.

  5. Responsibility:
"I believe that every right implies a responsibility; every opportunity an obligation; every possession a duty." — J.D. Rockefeller, American Industrialist and Philanthropist.
I think that the quote has in relation to the hike is that regardless whatever duty that has been duly responsible given to us by our teachers should be taken in thought of. And not misuse your authority and abuse it on other purposes that is one-sided. Instead, responsibility is about everyone around, we ought to give others a chance of their own to speak up, like what we did on Saturday, each one of us exchanged ideas to one another openly, that was nothing to be hidden or to be shy about.

  6. Responsibility:
"I believe that to meet the challenge of the next century, human beings will have to develop a greater sense of universal responsibility. Each of us must learn to work not just for his or her own self, family or nation, but for the benefit of all mankind."
    -His holiness the Dalai Lama

I think that it means we decide the fate of mankind and the next generation,so we need to develop a type of responsibility that will first start from being responsible with our own actions and words to t=being responsible about what we do for the next generation. This means that being responsible is very important as it will affect not only ourself, the next generation but all of mankind
